The aim of the two projects is to understand how dynamic changes in the three-dimensional folding of chromosomes influence genome function during cellular differentiation and to identify the proteins that shape the genome. Each project will focus on embryonic stem cells and involves the use of novel genomics methods based on micro-array and high-throughput sequencing, in combination with RNAi knock-down strategies and existing knock-out cells.
The department: The main research goal of the Department of Cell Biology, headed by Prof. Frank Grosveld, is to understand the molecular, cellular and physiological basis of normal development and disease. Together with several other departments at the Erasmus MC it offers excellent research facilities, including in-house micro-array and mass spectrometry facilities, bioinformatics, state-of-the-art microscopes, etc. The department has an international PhD program (approx. 30 students from many different countries).
